Crown Melbourne opened on 30 June 1994 at the World Trade Centre on the north bank of the Yarra, relocated to its current Southbank address in 1997, and has been running 24 hours with only statutory interruptions since. On the opening night of the original casino in 1994, actress Rachel Griffiths ran through the floor topless to protest the project. The casino survived the protest and opened thirty years of continuous operation. It's that kind of place.

I walked the Crown Melbourne main floor on a Thursday evening and the first thing you register is the sound: not the mechanical clatter of a UK casino, but the full acoustic spectrum of a very large room with a very high ceiling running at perhaps sixty percent capacity. The baccarat tables are distributed through the floor rather than consolidated in a corner, which gives the room a less hierarchical feel than you might expect.

The Mahogany Room is the high-limit pit at Crown Melbourne. It's a separate, enclosed space with its own entrance, its own dress code enforcement (which is stricter than the main floor), and a player composition that skews heavily to Asian high-rollers and serious domestic players. Collared shirt and closed shoes at minimum; the Mahogany Room applies its dress standard with more rigour than the main floor. Crown Melbourne's published dress standards state that smart casual is required throughout; the Mahogany Room adds the expectation of a collared shirt, regardless of what the main floor tolerates.

Crown Melbourne underwent a significant regulatory review through the COVID-19 period and into 2021 and 2022, when the Victorian Royal Commission into the Crown Casino operations examined licence conditions, money-laundering risks, and the conduct of junket operations. The findings were significant enough to result in Crown being placed under a Special Manager before its suitability to continue holding the licence was confirmed. The licence was retained under enhanced conditions.

Crown Baccarat and 2 to 1 Baccarat are proprietary variants with modified pay structures. 2 to 1 Baccarat pays 2:1 on Player wins (instead of 1:1), which sounds attractive until you examine the accompanying rule changes, which absorb that advantage; the edge is recalibrated accordingly. The Mahogany Room runs Traditional Baccarat with higher table limits. Main floor minimums are subject to change with demand; AUD$25 is the low-water mark, with higher minimums applying during peak evenings.

Getting in

Crown Melbourne is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the exception of a 4am to 12pm closure on Christmas Day, Good Friday, and ANZAC Day. No membership required. Smart casual attire is required at all times; footwear must be worn. Ripped clothing, camouflage, work singlets, active sporting attire, and steel-cap boots are specifically listed as unacceptable by Crown's published dress standards. Management applies discretion.

The Crown complex is walking distance from Flinders Street Station (Princes Bridge side, approximately 15 minutes) or accessible directly from the Spencer Street (Southern Cross) station area via the Yarra River waterfront. Trams run along Flinders Street and St Kilda Road, both accessible from the Southbank side.

The neighbourhood

Crown Melbourne occupies a substantial portion of Southbank, the river-frontage precinct on the south side of the Yarra. The Arts Centre Melbourne is ten minutes east on foot along the waterfront. Princes Bridge connects to Flinders Street Station and the CBD. The Southgate dining precinct, adjacent to Crown, runs to midnight on most evenings.

For late-night eating outside the Crown complex, the CBD grid is accessible across the bridge. Chinatown on Little Bourke Street is twenty minutes by foot or five by taxi and runs considerably later than the Southbank restaurants.
